With the Winter Olympics starting this month, I have been in a sleep-deprived state. Too many nights staying up too late watching all of the action. From the Opening Ceremonies it was evident that the organizers in PyeongChang, Korea were going to put on a great show. Whether it’s Shaun White’s incredible third attempt run in the half pipe to win gold, USA Hockey, downhill skiing, and even figure skating and speed skating, I am a fan. One of the things I really like is seeing all of the athletes from the different countries compete. Some of the best stories have been the Norwegian “fighting Vikings” downhill skiers, South Korean, Yun Sung-bin (Iron Man) capturing gold in skeleton, the gold medal winning German Figure Skating Pairs, and the tie for gold in the bobsled.
I was fortunate to compete in three World Games. While the World Games does not quite have the same high budget luster as the Olympic Games, it is a great event. The World Games is under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The World Games is held every four years, the year following the Summer Olympics. The IOC Flag is visible in the various venues, and there is an Olympic type atmosphere. I earned the silver medal in my first World Games in 2001 Akita City, Japan. Unfortunately, I fell a little short of the podium with 4th place finishes in 2005 Duisburg, Germany, and 2009 Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Even though I did not collect many medals at the World Games, being a part of these three events are the best experiences that I had in the sport. The 2021 World Games will be held in Birmingham, Alabama.
Outside of watching the Olympics, I have been busy working, training, coaching and watching my daughters compete. Lizzy’s Minneota Viking basketball team is ranked eighth in State and has a great chance of making it to the Class A State Tournament. The team starts section playoffs this weekend. Emily is wrapping up her first indoor track season at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU). She will be competing in the NSIC Conference Championships this weekend.
My training progress towards my goal of getting my deadlift back over 800 lbs., continues on track. After pulling my hamstring last fall, while training a set of five, I have tried something different these past two training cycles. I am pulling progressive singles, and increasing the weight 22 lbs. (10 kg) each week. I pulled a post-50 training PR of 750 lbs. this past week. I am going to take a week off from full deadlifts and train out of the power rack. The following week I will try to finish my training cycle with 771 lbs.
