I have really been running since the USAPL RAW Nationals. In late October, I traveled to Anaheim, California to attend the National Strength and Conditioning (NSCA) Personal Trainers Conference. It was another great conference with my time spent talking with many coaches and attending some of the presentations. The conference was held at the Anaheim Hilton. The hotel spa and fitness center has one of the best free weight rooms I have ever seen in a hotel. I had a couple great weight training and mobility workouts during the conference.
My trip to Anaheim brought back some great memories. In 2007, I stayed at the Anaheim Hilton with my Father and several family members to watch my brother Karl compete in his third World’s Strongest Man (WSM) competition. The 2007 WSM was contested right out in the street, in between the palm trees, in front of the hotel. Karl was in great shape that year and had been doing very well in his other international competitions. He made a nice run in his preliminary heat, but did not make the final. Mariusz Pudzianowski from Poland, looking like he could step on the Mr. Olympia stage, won his fourth WSM title that year.
It has been an exciting fall sports season for my wife and me with both of our girls active in athletics. We try to make as many of the events as possible. This makes for a busy schedule. In early November, Emily competed for Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) in the Regional Cross Country Championships in Kearney, NE. I made the 400-mile trip down to Kearney to watch the race. The weather conditions were less than perfect….cold and windy. I really have a lot of respect for all of the runners. These races are brutal enough without the cold and wind. Emily is just a freshman and has many races in her future. She will be starting indoor track in December. After the race, I turned right around to get back home to watch Lizzy and the Minneota Viking Volleyball Team win the Section Finals. The following week the team finished off a tremendous season by finishing State Runner Up.
With the busy schedule, and a need to recover, I took an extended time off from any heavy training. I am just starting to get back into a training cycle this week. The body feels ready and I am definitely fired up for workouts. I am looking forward to staying strong and competing more in 2018!
