The Dog Days of Summer

Blog Article ImageThe Dog Days of summer are here in Minnesota.  We have gone through a long stretch of 90-100 degree weather these past 3 weeks.  Tonight it was 101F on the thermometer on the way into the gym.  This makes it difficult when your gym is in a large metal building with no air conditioner. It has not been hard to get warmed up! When training in extreme weather conditions I have found that it has been important to adapt my training a little to avoid becoming overheated, or exposing myself to injury as a result of muscle cramping. It is important to take in quality nutrition and plenty of fluids when training in the heat. The endurance and recovery gains I get from taking GNC Pro Performance HMB on a daily basis are more important then ever when training in less then ideal conditions.

There are just two weeks of training left before the 2012 USAPL RAW Nationals in Killeen, Texas.  Despite the heat things have been going pretty good.  Friday will be our last heavy squat day.  I stuck with 5x5 most of my training cycle, but I made an adaption due to the heat these last couple weeks, and have dropped my sets and reps to a 3x3 format.  I have worked up to 3x666, and would like to finish with 3x677 this week.  My torn triceps are feeling stronger, and although my bench is not what it used to be it has come a long ways since this winter. I look to be in the lower to mid 500’s on meet day. My deadlift training has been down a little, but with the deadlift you can never know what to expect on meet day.

I got away from the heat this past weekend by attending the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Annual Conference in Providence, Rhode Island. I have attended this conference the past 10 years with GNC. The conference is a great time to talk over training and nutrition ideas with different coaches and experts in the field.  I learn something new every year at this conference. The NSCA has really helped me be able to continue to increase my knowledge about strength training. As an added bonus….I was able to make time to cool off by the ocean after we were done each day.

Train smart, stay healthy, set your goals high, and don't forget to add GNC Pro Performance HMB to your supplement list! Good luck in meeting your strength and fitness goals!!!
