Summer Training

Blog Article ImageSummer is here which always makes for a busy time at the gym.  Last week we sent Gary Grahn, Luke Klien, and Sam Derynk off to the IPF World Championships in Potchefstroom, South Africa.  There was some crazy, intense training going on at the gym in the weeks leading up to the contest.  The heavy training paid off as all three of the guys did real well.  Coach Gary Grahn placed 5th in the Masters II Category in the 205 lb. class.  Gary has traveled all over the world supporting Team USA and Jackals Gym Athletes.  It was great to see him get a chance to lift on the World Stage.  Sam Derynck placed 9th in a very competitive Junior 183 lb. Class.  Big Luke “Gravel” Klein took home the Silver Medal for the second straight year in the Junior Superheavyweight Class. Everyone will be back at it going heavy next week in preparation for the USAPL Nationals in July.

This summer we have several athletes from different disciplines training in the gym.  I am working with high school and collegiate wrestlers, football players, volleyball, basketball, softball, track and cross country athletes. Most of the athletes train on our standard 8 week training template with a few adaptions.  An example might be more of an emphasis on Olympic cleans and less emphasis on deadlift. I have switched up the training a little for some of the younger athletes. I have started training my daughters and some of their teammates two days a week in Minneota.  These girls are 13-16 years old.  I have them training twice a week with a base of box jumps, lunges, and light snatches or overhead squats as warm up. This is followed by a 5x3 full Olympic cleans, 8x2 speed squats, 5x5 bench, pikes and planks.

Last weekend I attended the Minnesota State Track and Field Championships. My daughter (Emily) and her CML teammates ran in the 4x800 Relay.  Although they did not medal they had a great day and broke their PR by 6 seconds.  I trained a couple of these girls including my daughter last winter leading up to track season using the above mentioned program.  Hard work pays off!!!

After a very long lay-off I am just getting back into some moderate to heavy training.  Looking forward to some intense workouts with the Jackals Team leading up to the USAPL Nationals!
