It will soon be time to put the boat away, and to start thinking about hunting season. The fall is my favorite time of the year, but this summer went by way too fast. Most of the summer I stayed busy getting ready for Nationals, coaching the Minneota Girl’s weight training athletes, and hanging out with the family. My oldest daughter Emily will begin cross country practice, and youngest daughter Lizzy will begin volleyball practice on Monday. Both of them worked very hard all summer lifting weights and practicing their sports. Now we are in the process of trying to figure out how we will get our weight training workouts in during the season. It is always a challenge to fit weight lifting in between games, meets and tournaments. The volleyball team will continue with our summer training by condensing into one day a week.
I was pleased to read an interview this week of former Green Bay Packer General Manager Ron Wolf. He was recently elected to the NFL Hall of Fame and was asked what former Packer players deserve to be in the Hall of Fame. He mentioned former Packers Safety Bobby Dillon and Offensive Guard Gale Gillingham as deserving to be in the Hall of Fame. "In Green Bay, there are two guys that everybody that's connected with the game will tell you," he said. "Gale Gillingham and Bobby Dillon are two of the best Packers ever to play, and they're not here.” "He (Gale Gillingham) was a dominant player," Wolf said. “He was a cut above. I don't know how to better phrase that. He was a lot better than the people he was playing against." It is good to hear that dad has not been forgotten in terms of these kinds of discussions. He was a pioneer in the NFL in weight training. Most of his training in the off season was done in our basement or garage. He moved weights that are still not surpassed by many to this day. Obviously a big factor in our family’s continued passion towards strength training.
I have about 2 months to go before the 2015 USAPL RAW Nationals in Scranton, Pennsylvania. So far the heavy workouts are going well. I have been very consistent in hitting some mobility work prior to each workout, and in between heavy workouts. This includes a combination of Spiderman’s, kettle bell swings, Bulgarian split squats, and light full cleans. I am really seeing a benefit from this extra work.
