Spreading your feet too wide will not allow you to receive the bar in a very low position. I would put mats to both sides of your feet (about shoulder width apart). Pull in your normal stance, and, the mats will only allow you to move until they hit the mats. Use lighter weights to begin with. Another big reason people move their feet so wide is because they want to stay out of the full squat position. So increase your front squat and this may also help!
