I competed in the USAPL GNC Empire Classic Pro Deadlift Competition in Spokane, Washington this past weekend. I have competed in this show the past three years and each year it gets bigger and better. I am only four weeks out from the IPF Classic World Championship in Sudzal, Russia so I did not try to peak for this event, but decided to use the competition as a heavy training day. With the IPF Worlds being the focus event I didn’t feel like I could afford to take any break from my heavy training, so I trained heavy the week of the event. At the Empire Classic I lifted RAW and was able to pull 804 for the win but did not have enough energy that day to complete my last attempt with 848. Fellow Team HMB teammate Bryan Dermody had a personal record-breaking day with his 793 deadlift for 2nd place.
The Star of the Show was Ali McWeeny from Central Washington University. Ali was involved in a boating accident a few years ago and tragically lost one of her legs. She has not let her disability stop her from doing the things she wants to do and has returned to powerlifting. Although she failed to complete a lift on the main stage it was a real honor to compete with her. It was amazing to see her pull deadlifts during warm ups standing on one leg. She has a lot of courage and is a great role model for all of us.
With just 4 weeks of training to go before I compete in Russia these next couple weeks are critical. I have changed up my deadlift training a little this time and have been pulling 1 set of 8 every other week instead of 1 set of 5. This week I have 8x705. This will be a huge confidence builder if I can make this set. I have also thrown in Kroc Rows. Kroc Rows are a different way of training the one arm row….. made popular by powerlifter and bodybuilder Matt Kroczaleski. I have found these to be a great addition, and have really thickened up the upper back in a short time. In addition to my own training, I am also coaching 3 lifters that will be traveling with me to Russia and competing in the Junior Worlds. With 4 lifters training for the worlds the gym will be an intense place the next 3-4 weeks.
