Continue to myHMB.comResearchers investigated the effects HMB had on immune response and inflammatory processes. To study these effects, blood cells (peripheral blood mononuclear cells) were isolated from eight volunteers and assayed for proliferation and cytokine production. HMB concentrations used for the study ranged from 0.1 to 10 mM. Results showed that greater than physiological concentrations (10 mM) of HMB decreased proliferation, but at physiological concentrations (less than 5 mM), no decreases were seen. However, physiological concentrations did decrease inflammatory cytokine production and reduced TNF-α availability. Both of these responses help improve the immune response.
