We have had a very mild fall in Minnesota, and we are yet to have any snow on the ground in the southwest corner of the state. With Thanksgiving in a few days the Minnesota hunting seasons are in full swing. Being an avid hunter; I have been spending my free time hunting pheasants, ducks, geese and deer…. definitely my favorite time of the year. It is also a great time to get in some much needed walking and hiking in pursuit of game. Long walks across fields, swamps, and woods are all part of the hunting challenge, and I generally get in pretty good shape during hunting season.
I have recently accepted an invitation from Julio Conrado, IPF South American Region President to compete in the Brazil Invitational Deadlift Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil the weekend of December 8-9. This will be my 25th international trip, but I will be competing in South America for the first time. With this competition I will now be able to complete a significant goal of mine which is to compete on all continents with the exclusion of Antarctica. I would have never imagined the places I have come to know when I competed in my first small bench meet in Brainerd, Minnesota back in 1989. In addition to the competition; I have been invited to participate in a strength seminar on December 8th. What a great opportunity, and an honor to be able to share some of my training knowledge and learn from others. Over the years I have been fortunate to participate in strength seminars all over the USA, Canada, Japan, Germany and now Brazil. The audience is always eager to learn, and I have been able to take in a lot of knowledge in the process. The great thing about strength athletes is that they are always willing to share training tips with each other.
By accepting the invitation to compete in Brazil I had to move quickly out of my transitional training phase and start training some heavy pulls. Although I do not expect to compete at peak form in Brazil…I am very pleased with my quick progress and the strength that I was able to maintain. I pulled a very easy set of 5 with 727 tonight. That is not far off from my PR 5x755. All of the Olympic lifting and functional movements that I have been training this fall have been paying off. By switching up my training I have been able to add some mobility, and I have strengthened some weak areas. I am much healthier now than at the beginning of the year, and I am able to increase my training intensity and volume. I am starting to think about that 903 pull once again…
