I kicked off 2017 by traveling to the NSCA Coaches Conference in Nashville, TN. This year the conference was held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center. The magnitude of the Gaylord Opryland Resort is something that you really have to see for yourself to understand. It has indoor gardens, a waterfall, and a river walk boat ride all under one roof. The conference itself was great. I heard the conference had record numbers for attendance this year. I spent most of my time talking to coaches at the GNC Booth. Another great week of discussing training, looking at new equipment and hanging out with strength training professionals. I say this often, but if you are a strength athlete, trainer or a coach the NSCA has a lot of resources to offer. Expanding your knowledge will not only help you to get better, but will allow you to be in a better position to help others.
My oldest daughter Emily has started her winter training for the spring track and field season at the D1 Sports Training Facility in Sioux Falls, SD. This is a new state-of-the-art facility that has quite a bit to offer with an indoor practice field and top of the line equipment. We will travel to Sioux Falls once a week to work with her trainer, and then she will complete the rest of her training at her high school. She has been working very hard and is getting much stronger this winter. We’re hoping for a 150 lb. clean before track starts. It’s amazing how many training facilities are now available to the public. When I first started training there were very few gyms around.
It’s that time of the year to work on those New Year’s resolutions and fitness goals. Every year I always set some short term and long term goals. In the strength athletics world setting goals, and making training plans to achieve those goals, is the formula for getting stronger. I have set goals this year to get back to the competitive platform in 2017, and to continue to motivate myself to stay strong and work hard. As one of my long time training partners likes to say: “continue to keep up the good fight.” I am back to training this week and continue to really enjoy any time I get to spend in the gym. After 35 years of training the best advice I have for meeting your goals is to have fun training and surround yourself with great training partners.
