I just got back from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Coaching Conference, and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Conference in San Antonio, Texas. This is the third time I have traveled to San Antonio for these two conferences.  It definitely was a good time of the year to be heading south as Minnesota winter was brutally cold (-20) this past week. The hotels and convention center are located right on the river walk.  The river walk is made up of a number of walkways along the San Antonio River located below the streets of downtown San Antonio.  Anytime there are 10,000 coaches in town you know it is going to be a lively place. I had a great opportunity to speak to a large number of coaches about sports nutrition and training, and to catch up with some old friends.

I have switched up a few things in my training.  I have added more front squats into the mix along with a few sets of Zercher Squats.  I have not trained Zercher squats for almost 15 years. Zercher squats are performed by holding the bar in the crooks of the elbows and squatting down to parallel.  Squatting this way requires you to remain very upright, and to concentrate on mainly hip extension (squeezing the glutes) to finish the lift.  Your upper back and traps get pumped from just a couple sets. Years ago I used to go very heavy with this assistance exercise.  This time around I do not plan on pushing my luck, with my repaired biceps, but I feel can get some benefit by adding in some lighter sets after deadlifting. 

One of the things I always try to suggest at the start of a New Year is to establish new training goals.  Setting goals is what drives us all to put in the extra work to make those tough gains.  I have some big goals for 2016. I am planning on competing in several contests this year. My first goal is to try to get my deadlift back over 800 lbs. at the Arnold USAPL Pro Deadlift in March, and then to try and win my 7th World Title in Killeen, Texas in June.  There will be a lot of hard work ahead these next few months.  Now that Santa has headed back to the North Pole it is time to get after it at Jackals Gym!
