I had a great time last weekend competing in the GNC Pro Performance USAPL Pro Deadlift Competition at the NPC Empire Classic in Spokane, Washington. The event was very well attended and the crowd was wild. They got louder and louder with each lift and were worked up into a frenzy at the end. This was a really a fun competition for me. I was able to get up on stage and compete with fellow Team HMB members Bryan Dermody and John Conner along with long time friend Randall Harris "Big ROH" and 2010 IPF World Team member Erik Kasabuske. All of the competitors took this contest very serious, but it was the kind of contest that was relaxing and a lot of fun. It was hosted at the Quest Casino near the Spokane Airport. Spokane is a beautiful city that sits alongside the Rocky Mountains right in the middle of prime hunting and fishing country. The event took place during the intermission of the NPC Empire Classic Bodybuilding Championships.
All of the competitors warmed up together near the GNC booth in the back of the venue. We had to really work well together to warm up in a very tight area, and there was a lot of camaraderie amongst the group. We were never quite sure if we were on schedule because the start of the deadlift event depended on when the proceeding bodybuilding events finished. Consequently there was a rather long delay between are last warm ups and our first event finished, but despite the long delay everyone lifted well. The competition opened up on a high note as Erik Kasabuske, who only weighed in at 198, opened with a PR 705. Bryan Dermody set the intensity level for the rest of the competitors with all three of his lifts and was able to pull a big PR 777 on his third attempt. John Conner came in injured but battled the best he could and pulled a very strong 804.
There was an exciting battle at the end between Randall Harris and myself for the first place prize. Big ROH, weighing in at 352 lbs, pulled a PR 843 on his 2nd attempt. This forced me to crank it up a notch, and fortunately I was able to pull 854 on my third for the victory. I look forward to traveling back to Spokane next year as there are plans for another event in 2012. Congratulations to all of the competitors!!
There was very little time to savor the victory as I have the USAPL Nationals in 6 weeks. I was back training 5x5 squats on Wednesday night with 578 lbs. I credit GNC Pro Performance HMB for giving me the energy and recovery to perform these heavy sets less than a week after lifting heavy in competition. I have one more 5x5 workout planned with 606 lbs in 2 weeks, and then it is time to try and peak my training for the meet.
Train hard, stay healthy, set your goals high, and don't forget to add GNC Pro Performance HMB to your supplement list!
