Down Time

Blog Article ImageFollowing my win at the 2013 IPF Classic RAW World Championships I decided that it would be too much to push myself any further and compete at the USAPL Nationals. I needed some Down Time in my training intensity.  In other words it was time to shut it down for a while. The pec strain I had prior to worlds was still an issue, and I still am having problems with my chronic hamstring glute injury.  It was a tough decision not to compete, but one I needed to make to not further my injuries.  I also did not want to spoil my chance to celebrate my win in Russia by not being able to compete at a high level at the Nationals.  The biggest implication is that I will not be able to defend my title in Kazakhstan next summer. 

One big benefit from having some down time is that I have been able to spend more time with the wife Diane and daughters Emily and Elizabeth. We have been doing a lot of tubing and water skiing during July and enjoying the summer.  I have been brave enough to skid across the water on a tube, but at 330 lbs and 47 years old my water skiing days have been long over.

I have recently started some light training.  I have gone back to an old friend of mine by incorporating a 3-day a week Russian front squat program. For many years during the off-season I would train these 6-week programs back to back.  Thinking I needed a change; I quit doing this program about 3 years ago.  I have started back very light.  Week one I did 5x5 with 264 and have gone as heavy as 4x5 with 490 in the past.  I am going to slightly change the workout up a little bit and cycle it into 4-week mini cycles.  I plan to try and stick with this program for the next 4 months and hope to get back close to a 4x5 with 490 again. I am hopefully that by incorporating this high volume front squat program into my training it will help cure my chronic glute hamstring injury.  With this high volume approach I will depend more than ever on the great recovery benefits that I obtain from my daily supplementation with GNC Pro Performance HMB

My next competition will be USAPL sanctioned deadlift contest at the Alaska Fitness Expo in October.  At this point I am hopeful that the body will be healthy and that I will be able to compete at a high level in October.
