Down But Not Out

Blog Article ImageAs I mentioned in my previous blog I had a temporary setback this summer after my trip home from the IPF Pacific Open in Melbourne, Australia. In early May following the Empire Classic I was put on 12 weeks of blood thinners to treat a Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) that set in during the long flight home from down under.  I have made around 30 of these international trips in my career and I imagine the odds were stacking up that the possibility of a DVT happening at some point were pretty high. I soon found out that the medicine I was prescribed to treat this condition made any type of heavy training nearly impossible.  The good news is that the lack of heavy training allowed me to rest some nagging injuries and work on stretching and conditioning. This is a good thing, rarely in my training history have I ever really shut things down for an extended period of time.

I have been off the medicine now for 1 week and I already am feeling like my old self.  I am going to slowly ease back into training heavy and in a couple months will be training hard for the GNC Pro Deadlift at the Arnold Classic. I consider my down time only a temporary setback.  I am hungrier now than ever to train hard and maximize my strength.  Maybe in the long run the forced rest has not only refreshed me physically but also mentally. The fire is burning to get back on the platform!

In my downtime this summer I was able to really focus on training a number of athletes.  I worked with a group of 8-10 junior high girls, my daughters and their friends, a couple days a week at our hometown gym in Minneota.  We had 4 girls clean 100+ and the group as a whole really learned how to lift properly and made great gains. We had 6-7 high school and college athletes training at Jackals Gym. Very rewarding to see the progress that can be made in a summer. I was also able to concentrate on helping 2 lifters get ready for IPF Classic Worlds and 6 lifters get ready for the USAPL Nationals. An intense summer in the Gym!

Next up, in September, I will be traveling to Las Vegas to attend the Olympia and work the GNC Grip Gauntlet with my brothers.  Time to get the grip back in shape!

Train smart, stay healthy, set your goals high, and make sure to add GNC Pro Performance HMB to your supplement list.

Stay Strong!
