Busy Fall | Brad Gillingham

I am spending most of my free time these days enjoying watching my high school junior (Lizzy) play volleyball, and my college freshman (Emily) run cross country.  Lizzy’s team is currently ranked eighth in state.  We are a small Class A School (Minneota) and we recently beat several large Class AAA ranked schools from the metro area in a tournament.  The team is looking good and the rest of the season should be very interesting.  Emily has run in her first two college cross country races for Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU).  She will be running this weekend at the University of Minnesota Roy Griak Invitational.  It will be the first time she has stepped up from the 5K distance to a 6K race.  I am sure she is ready for the challenge.

I continue to help as a strength training coach for Minneota Girls Volleyball, SMSU Volleyball, SMSU Wrestling, and at Jackals Gym.  This combined with my full time job and travel related to coaching seminars and lifting events keeps me running.  The older I get the more I enjoy the journey of developing strength.  I am thankful for the opportunities I have to work with lots of different athletes.

The SMSU Wrestlers are being fed a steady diet of sandbag carries, farmer’s walks, Rogue sled pulls and Rogue sled pushes.  This extra General Physical Preparedness (GPP) training follows our standard 8-week strength-training template.  Training with strongman type implements is something new for most of these athletes.  All of the workouts end with everybody putting out a high level of effort and intensity. This is the hardest we have ever worked in the fall during the 6 years I have been involved.  You can really see the progress in everyone.  Hard work pays off! Remember… “You never have to forgive yourself for working too hard.”

I am finishing my training for the USAPL Nationals in Orlando, Florida in October. Training has been going well.  I have switched things up a little bit.  I am still not ready for a high amount of squat volume (my standard 5x5) in the same workout. I have been splitting up the volume by squatting a couple times a week.  I have been hitting a moderate amount of GPP work after each workout.

Train smart, stay healthy, set your goals high, and make sure to add GNC Pro Performance HMB along with BetaTOR and BetaATP products, available at your local GNC Store, to supplement your strength, energy and recovery needs.  These products are essential for any athlete that wants to train harder and recover faster!

Stay Strong!
