I attended the NSCA Personal Trainers Conference in Jacksonville, Florida last weekend with GNC. It is amazing that this Conference was able to go on as planned considering that Hurricane Matthew hit the Jacksonville area the previous weekend. Fortunately, downtown Jacksonville did not suffer much damage. The Conference was held at the Hyatt Regency Riverfront. I had a great view of the St. Johns River and the downtown Jacksonville area from my room. An added bonus was that it was 27 degrees when I left Minnesota and I was greeted with 70-degree weather in Florida. Several of the presentations were held right in the middle of the Exhibitors Hall. This gave me an opportunity to see a lot of different training methods; some that are a little out of my normal heavy strength training box. I picked up some good ideas for training some of my athletes by watching several good presentations on speed, agility, conditioning and quickness drills. There were also some interesting presentations on things like battling ropes, Indian clubs, kettle bells, and barefoot training.
We were real busy at Jackals Gym this fall getting a couple lifters ready for the 2016 USAPL RAW Nationals. The gym is proud to add another National Champion to our list as Minnesota National Guard- Iraq War Veteran Dean Johnson won his M1 Class. Luis “Pops” Macias also had a nice PR day and has a bright future. It looks like we will have several lifters training hard this winter for the 2017 Minnesota State and the Arnold. This always makes for a great gym environment!
I have been training to the best of my ability while still recovering from the DVT “blood clot”. I am hopeful that I can get off the blood thinners by the end of the year. I have been able to keep my upper body fairly strong, but being on medicine has really weakened my legs and back. I haven’t been able to train my staple 5x5 squat template, and I am limited on how frequently I can train heavy rack pulls and full deadlifts. My squat training right now is a mixture of speed squats, box squats and front squats in the 2-3 rep range. I am primarily training light RDLs along with multiple sets of bent over rows during my back and deadlift workouts. I am hopeful that I can make a return to one of the USAPL National events in 2017.
