2013 Arnold Classic

Blog Article ImageI have now attended the last 12 Arnold Classic Sports Festival.  The Arnold is always a very busy weekend for me running the GNC Grip Gauntlet with my brothers, but a great time to catch up with a lot of old friends and be able to talk with all kinds of different athletes, young and old. I continue to be impressed with everything that is going on. There is something at the Arnold for any fan of sports. What a showcase for the world of athletics!

I competed along with fellow Team HMB powerlifters Bryan Dermody and Nick Weite in the GNC Pro Performance IPF Deadlift Championships on Saturday. Bryan had a great attempt at a new PR 793 deadlift, but fell a little short. Bryan will get that pull at the Empire Classic Pro Deadlift in May. Nick smoked 821 but stumbled a little on top and lost his balance, and then had another close pull at 832. He looks stronger than ever and will represent USA very well at the World Games in Cali, Colombia this summer.

This year’s contest was hotly contested in front of a huge crowd as usual. Kim Walford amazed everyone with her 518 deadlift to win first place in both the Women’s Heaviest Deadlift and Bodyweight Categories. Two times Arnold Champion Alyssa Hitchcock and her 490 deadlift followed her very close. I was able to pull 865 to win first place in the Men’s Heaviest Deadlift category. Veteran competitor Pat McGettigan pulled 821 for 2nd in this category. Unfortunately, on his next attempt he pulled 837 to the lock out position before injuring his biceps.  Ian Bell continued to amaze by pulling 810 to win first place in the Bodyweight category and 3rd place in the Heaviest Deadlift category.  Young 20 year old Erik Gunhamn from Sweden placed 2nd in Bodyweight with a 799 pull only weighing in at 202 lbs.

GNC Pro Performance HMB continues to amaze me with its great recovery benefit. Working a three-day show like the Arnold is taxing on the body; even if you are not competing. It is hard sometimes at the Arnold to eat right and even take in the correct supplementation. I was very diligent on Friday to take in my HMB on a regular basis, and even add a few extra grams to my usual supplementation. I was amazed how well I felt on Saturday. HMB continues to amaze me in the recovery area!!
