2012 is shaping up to be a low volume contest year for me. My wife and I have a baby due at the end of June and the hours I am working seem to be increasing every week. With that in mind, I’ve had to be a bit picky about what contests I do this year. After competing in the Amateur World Championship last month, I plan to do some local contests here in Michigan in July and August. 105kg Pro Strongman Nationals is scheduled for October in Phoenix. Even though that is 6 months away, I know time will fly by and the contest will come up fast. As of now, those are the four contests I plan to do this year.
Despite being very crunched for time lately, my training as a whole has been going quite well. Although I’ve had to cut back on some of my strongman specific training time, I’m still making great gains when I do get it in. This also translates into working hard on my gym lifts like squats and deadlifts. Because of this I’ve been keeping my training very short and to the point too. I’m matching my previous best numbers in the squat and deadlift from before I tweaked my upper back in 2011. My body weight is up slightly and I’m around 218-220 in the morning these days. I feel that training is really on track and expect some more significant gains over the next few months. In addition to my essential HMB which I am sure to take every day, I have been using the Optimum Nutrition’s Performance Whey and Hydrobuilder. These are two great products to go along with HMB and really maximize the gains I get from every training session.
