"How can I train to maximize strength without gaining size?"

The answer to this question is actually pretty simple. It has been generally accepted for a long time that training in the repetition range of 1-4 will increase muscular strength with a minimal increase in muscular size. It is also important to consider nutrition in answering this question. Make sure that intake of calories does not exceed calories used when not trying to gain weight.
